Patent Scientist

We are seeking a highly motivated Patent Scientist to help shape and protect the core IP strategy of Quercus. You will work closely with internal and external R&D teams and collaborators, as well as with senior leadership to translate scientific innovation into strong, defensible intellectual property. You’ll play a critical role in defining the patent landscape for our mini-protein platform and supporting its applications across crop protection and beyond. 

• Partner with scientists, computational biologists, and leadership to identify and articulate patentable inventions early in the discovery and development process 
• Draft invention disclosures and manage the preparation, filing, and prosecution of U.S. and international patent applications 
• Oversee and facilitate relationships with outside patent counsel, ensuring cost-effective and strategic IP filings aligned with commercial priorities 
• Conduct freedom-to-operate analyses and competitive IP landscape assessments to guide internal research and partnering 
• Develop and maintain an IP strategy roadmap that aligns with our technical and business objectives 
• Provide guidance on publication strategy and IP-related training for technical staff 

• MS (minimum) or PhD (preferred) in biochemistry, molecular biology, synthetic biology, plant biology, or a related field 
• 2–5+ years of experience in patent strategy, ideally in a startup or fast-paced innovation environment 
• Deep familiarity with biologics, peptides/proteins, and/or agricultural biotech IP 
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific concepts into strong IP claims 
• Familiarity with IP analytics platforms such as PatSnap for patent landscape analysis, competitive intelligence, and innovation scouting is strongly preferred 
• A creative, curious mindset with the ability to think expansively about applications of platform technologies 
• Registration to practice before the USPTO or relevant experience with outside counsel is a plus 

• Someone who sees the big picture and asks “what else could this become?” 
• A self-starter who thrives in ambiguity and brings structure where it’s needed
